Green chemistry in the CDMO world: Thermo Fisher Scientific's approach to sustainable API development and manufacturing

Video

Sustainable manufacturing in API development involves the concept of "greener by design." This principle is embedded within Thermo Fisher Scientific's larger sustainability goals, including our commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. To make API manufacturing more sustainable, we’re transitioning from traditional, wasteful practices to innovative, future-focused processes.

By integrating green chemistry and circular economy principles, we create environmentally friendly and economically viable processes. This involves considering sustainability early in drug development, despite preclinical uncertainties. Key strategies include optimizing process mass intensity (PMI) to reduce waste and carefully evaluating solvent use to minimize environmental impacts.

To learn more about our approach to green chemistry and how we embed sustainability at every stage of drug development, watch our video from CPHI North America, featuring Matt Hancock, Director of Business Management, API at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
