Mike Pearson, a program manager at Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Bend, Oregon site, faced an unexpected challenge late one summer. His team was tasked with optimizing the spray drying process for a particular medication, while a larger facility was supposed to handle the subsequent large-scale manufacturing. However, the project timelines were very challenging as his client’s investigational new drug (IND) submission was planned for the end of the year.
To address this, Thermo Fisher Scientific decided to leverage its global network and Quick to CareTM program, providing the client with their best chance at success. Mike and his team in Bend stepped up, undertaking an order nearly 10x the magnitude of their typical projects. This required them to transition to just-in-time manufacturing, a strategy that demands precise coordination and efficiency to minimize waste and inventory costs.
Through incredible effort and intensely coordinated activities, the Bend team optimized the formulation and produced the required batch, even hand-filling sachets. They then transferred the product to other Thermo Fisher Scientific sites for further testing, filling, and delivery to patients. The just-in-time manufacturing approach allowed the team to efficiently manage the sudden increase in production scale without overwhelming their resources.
Thanks to Thermo Fisher Scientific’s partnership across sites, the client met their deadlines and delivered their medication to patients in need.
